Bulldogs Close Home Season with Last Chance Meet

February 25, 2022 | Swimming & Diving

ATHENS, Ga. – Following a successful showing at last week's SEC Championships, the University of Georgia swimming and diving team returns home this weekend for the annual Bulldog Invitational Last Chance Meet, running Saturday, Feb. 26 through Sunday, Feb. 27 at Gabrielsen Natatorium.

Each day of competition includes two sessions, with both morning sessions beginning at 10 a.m. The Saturday evening session starts at 5 p.m., while Sunday's second slate begins at 4 p.m. The meet will not be streamed, but live results will be available on GeorgiaDogs.com and to paid subscribers on the MeetMobile app.

Georgia will be joined at the meet by athletes from SEC rivals Alabama, Auburn, and Florida, as well as BYU, Florida State, George Washington, Georgia Tech, and Hawaii. Athletes from the nine institutions will compete over the two days in search of season-best times and the opportunity to qualify for the upcoming NCAA Championships.

At the SEC Championships in Knoxville, both the Georgia men and women posted fourth-place finishes. Sophomore Luca Urlando won both the SEC Commissioner's Trophy for most individual points, as well as the SEC Men's Swimmer of the Meet Award. Urlando won gold in the 100 butterfly, 200 butterfly, and 200 IM, along with a silver medal in the 800 freestyle relay. During the week, he set four school records and became the first Bulldog man since 2006 to win three events at SECs.

Freshman Matthew Sates also posted a breakthrough meet with golds in the 200 and 500 freestyle, as well as silvers in the 200 butterfly and 800 freestyle relay. The South Africa product set school records in the 200 freestyle and 800 free relay and already ranks top 10 in program history in seven different events. Senior Andrew Abruzzo, junior Ian Grum, and sophomore Jake Magahey also reached the podium for the Bulldogs.

In the women's meet, junior Zoie Hartman turned in an outstanding performance, winning silver medals in all three of her individual events (100 breaststroke, 200 breaststroke, 200 IM). Senior Dakota Luther broke her own school record in the 200 butterfly with a second-place time, while senior Callie Dickinson and freshman Abby McCulloh earned bronze medals. At the diving well, sophomore Meghan Wenzel starred with finals appearances on both 1-meter and platform.

Following this weekend's meet, qualifiers for the NCAA Women's Championships will be announced this week, followed by men's qualifiers the subsequent week. The Georgia diving team will head to Atlanta for the Zone B Championships starting Monday, March 7 at Georgia Tech's McAuley Aquatic Center, the site of both NCAA meets.
