Women’s Basketball Ranked No. 17 in AP Preseason Poll

THE FLATS – Coming off a historic season, Georgia Tech women’s basketball begins the 2021-22 campaign ranked No. 17 in the Associated Press preseason poll released Tuesday, marking the third time in program history the Yellow Jackets have been ranked in the nation’s preseason top 25.

Georgia Tech is one of five teams from the ACC in the top 25, joining No. 5 NC State, No. 6 Louisville, No. 16 Florida State and No. 24 Virginia Tech. South Carolina sits atop the nation’s preseason top 25. The Jackets are ranked in the preseason top 25 for the first time since the 2012-13 season.

Georgia Tech is coming off a 2021 NCAA Tournament run to the Sweet 16 and returns 10 letterwinners from last season’s squad, including its starting five lineup. With the return of its core nucleus, the Yellow Jackets retain 97.5 percent of its scoring and 97.2 percent of its rebounding. Tech’s top three leading scorers from last season – Lotta-Maj Lahtinen (15.0 points per game), Kierra Fletcher (13.0 ppg) and Lorela Cubaj (12.5 ppg) – are all set for another season on The Flats. The reigning ACC Co-Defensive Player of the Year, Cubaj also averaged a double-double last season, leading the ACC in rebounding with an 11.5 rebounds per game average.

Tech capped last season with a 17-9 overall record, finished third the Atlantic Coast Conference standings and advanced to the semifinals of the ACC Tournament before making its 10th appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Yellow Jackets were ranked No. 22 in the final USA Today/WBCA Top 25 Postseason Coaches Poll.

The Yellow Jacket’s competitive schedule is highlighted by 17 home games, including a visit from No. 2 UConn on Thursday, Dec. 9.
